 Fired! What to do
 Asking for a raise

<< My start page  :: Careers

How to get that raise!

You've been working long hours. You've been producing great work. The time has come:

You want a raise and you want it now!

But before you go running into your boss' office, make sure you know what you are doing.

  1. Do Your Homework

    • Do some competitive analysis: Figure out what you're worth in the marketplace

    • Do some internal analysis: Figure out what you're worth to your boss

    • Time your meeting: Don't catch her in a bad mood

  2. Say the Right Thing

    • Don't threaten her by saying you have another job offer (unless you really do!)

    • Don't seem too desperate. You don't want her to feel sorry for you.

    • Make your worth clear!

    • Don't forget to follow up

  3. Send a Note Thanking Your Boss for Her Time

    • Confirm the points of your conversation in writing

    • Set a follow-up meeting if necessary

One last thing: Remember to relax, take a deep breath, and you'll be ready to go. Good luck!
