What is DSL Internet?

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a proven technology that offers secure, high-speed Internet access over existing copper lines. DSL can provide you with T1-like speeds up to 50 times faster than a 28.8Kbps modem. This is possible because digital communications can squeeze more capacity out of a phone line than analog modems. DSL technology delivers reliable ultra high-speed Internet access to homes & businesses by using today's existing traditional telephone line networks.

With DSL Internet service you can download graphics-heavy files, large documents, software, photos, email attachments, and more, instantly. It's perfect for real-time interactive multimedia, broadcast quality video, distance learning, and video-on-demand. And because DSL sends data and voice over the same line, you can talk on the phone while you connect.
 
DSL versus cable modems?

DSL provides 24/7 high-speed Internet access over a single dedicated telephone line. Cable modems offer high-speed Internet access over a shared cable television line. While cable modems may have greater theoretical downstream (from the Internet to the home) bandwidth capabilities, that bandwidth is shared among all users in a neighborhood, and will therefore vary, as more users in a neighborhood get online at the same time. Upstream traffic (from the customer premise to the Internet) over cable modems will in many cases be slower than DSL, either because the particular cable modem is slower, or because too many people in a neighborhood are trying to send or receive data at the same time - causing congestion in the local cable network.
 
Is my DSL connection secure?

DSL and cable modem networks are not very different from analog modem-based dial-up networks. They connect users to ISPs and the Internet using IP as their network protocol. However, DSL and cable modems are more attractive than dialup connections to hackers for the same reasons that make them more attractive to users. The ease of connection and available bandwidth of these networks result in users often staying online much longer, making them more vulnerable to attack attempts. Fortunately, there are precautions you can take to improve the security of your DSL connection.
 
"Always available" connection?

What is ADSL?

ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It provides high-speed digital modem technology via a single telephone line.
 
What is a static IP address?

A Static IP address is the same everytime a user logs on to the internet. So it enables a user to "host" a website or some other type of server connection for example, an (email server), since other internet users will always know the indentity of the hosting computer and will be able to connect to it.
 
Multiple users on one connection?

Yes, with DSL, your entire office can use a single, affordable high speed connection.
 
What is a dynamic IP address?

IP stands for "Internet Protocol." An IP address enables a computer to be identified on the Internet while the user is on-line. A dynamic IP address is one that is temporarily assigned to a user from a pool of IP addresses from a centrally administered server. The user has a different IP address each time s/he logs onto the Internet.
 
Will my phone features still work ?

Adding Canada On-line DSL to your phone line will not affect your other features -- all existing services remain on your phone line. DSL will no affect voice mail, Caller ID, call waiting, or other calling features.
 
Why can't I get DSL? My friend has it!

DSL is a distance-sensitive technology that works solely over copper phone lines. Check availability for your area.
Manufacturers today are working to enable their equipment to overcome the limitations and make DSL more widely available. So, while you may not qualify for the service today, it is possible that you could be able to receive it sometime in the future as the technology improves.

What if I sign up and move?

In order to transfer your DSL service to another address, you will need to make sure that Canada On-line DSL service is available to your new home.
 
Do I need an additional phone line?

No. ADSL technology utilizes varying frequency spectrums, 0-4 kHz for POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) and 100 kHz - 2.2Mhz for data transmission. This allows simultaneous analog voice or fax and DSL data transmission over the same telephone line. You still use your phone as you do now. Think of the DSL as an extra phone feature, like Call display.

How do I know my program versions?

The easiest way is to look under the Help menu for an About menu item. Click it and it should tell you the version number along with a host of other things. If that doesn't work, you'll have exit out of the program, then reload it. When the title screen shows up on-screen, look closely for a version number there. Once you've exhausted those two ways and still come up empty-handed, you'll have to look through the documentation or help file that came with the program.
 
What is my start page?

My Start Page is a unique place for you to keep everything at your fingertips. You can choose, arrange, and see things the way you want it.

My Start Page can be customized to your likes, by clicking Change Content, Change Layout, and Change Color. Every time you log-in to my start page, your personalized settings will be displayed.

How do I sign in to My start page?

You may sign in two ways:

1. Enter your email username and password in the appropriate fields at the top of the page. This function is available anywhere on the Canada On-line website.

2. Click My start page. Once there if you try to personalize content, or access you email - you will be brought to a sign in page. Once there, you will be asked to enter your email address username and password.
 
How do I access my email?

1. Make sure you are signed in to my start page.

2. Under the my account section on the top left side, click webmail. This will automatically pop up your email account.
